Game of Thrones will change the way sexual violence is depicted on screen following a barrage of complaints about a controversial rape scene last season. Critics and viewers were outraged after Sansa Stark, played by 19-year-old English actress Sophie Turner, was raped by Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon) on their wedding night. The scene, which aired in May, was part of a story arc which did not appear in the novels. It was criticized for being gratuitous, played for shock value and serving no narrative purpose. But, speaking at an event at Fox Studios Australia, director Jeremy Podeswa, who directed the graphic episode, said 'a couple of things had changed' in light of the response from viewers.

This is rank garbage and imitated pornography.
No one should watch it anyhow.
Why would anyone complain who likes the show? Something about a scorpion and a frog.
>>The scene, which aired in May, was part of a story arc which did not appear in the novels.<<
They’re right. The book scene it was meant to depict was considerably worse. Although they changed the female character.
During the initial first season, I stopped watching when they killed the loyal dog. Didn’t pick it up again for several years.
Why not just change the show to depict a typical radical Islamic family at home?
total crap show.
I kept hearing what a great show it was so I bought the DVD’s for Season 1. I consider it soft porn. I didn’t kame it half way through the first season. I think it’s vile. Now I’m stuck with the DVD’s. I won’t sell them because I don’t want to peddle porn.
Are you the TV Nazi? There’s a reason why it’s on a pay TV channel. The show does a play on British monarchy from the middle ages, and adds a fantasy aspect.
It wasn’t graphic. There was no nudity. Mainly, it depicted cruelty via the amused expression on the rapist’s face and the shocked and pained emotions running across the victim’s face.
I’ll take ‘em for free...
I’m ready for CleganeBowl!! I love all of the people posting what trash the show is when it’s based primarily on human history with a bit of fantasy thrown in.
Yeah. My guy loves the book series and he said that the show was considerably less horrible than the book.
He told me some of what happened with Reek and I’m like, yeah nope, can’t read it.
The books are as filthy as they are, because they are based upon Maurice Druon’s “Accursed Kings” series, but with fantasy elements added in.
Druon’s books have all that sexual violence because they are historical novelizations and the French Capetian monarchs really were that awful.
There will still be a number of people parading around the screen naked and having graphic, consensual sex. There will still be graphic depictions of gay sex. There will still be scenes of graphic, bloody battle carnage and gratuitous, graphic torture scenes. But at least they will be Politically Correct with no rape scenes. Because as we all know, women weren’t raped in Medieval societies.
Given that there are no rape scenes in the subsequent books, this seems like a pretty easy promise to make. Hypocrites.
I totally agree - the scene demonstrated the disgusting humiliation of rape.
On a different note, I was surprised that HBO is now talking eight seasons, especially if Jon Show returns. A lot of story lines are coming to resolution. I'm expecting it to start seeming anti-climatic by the end of season six, with the major players in place, the big puzzles resolved, and most of story over except for the fight scenes when Dany, Jon, and a TBD dragon rider square off against the White Walkers.
If Jon really is killed off, of course, it gets more complicated. But there has been an awfully lot of detailed plotting to get Jon, Dany, Tyrion, and Bran to where they are. GRRM could always throw a curve, but he would be cheating on his own opus to engineer a freak plot twist just for the heck of it. The major players' story arcs are heavily layered and interconnected. It's getting a bit late to pull a brand new major player into the story with a Gomer Pyle style "surprise, surprise."
That’s simply not true. This is nothing like British history.
Are you Joe Biden? Maybe you should study history before you make up stuff to defend left wing propaganda.
Well, there are no subsequent books at all...
