I agree with the author; besides being entertaining, we identify with the characters and their humanity.

...but overall the show is about people and what happens to their humanity when they face such situations.

The residents of Alexandria thought they were preserving humanity which is why their mostly dead while Rick’s group buries their humanity for survival purposes. This is evidenced when when they get into some zombie/outlaw survivalist entanglement.
I asked my daughter why her generation is so fascinated with zombies. She didn’t know.
It all kind of makes sense to me if I think of zombies as those without Christ.....the Bible says they are spiritually dead, after all.
