Except for automatic weapons registered prior to October 1986, it’s not legal to own an automatic weapon in the U.S. Thus, unless an automatic weapon is at least 29 years old, it’s not legal to own in the U.S.

I suppose you can argue what constitutes a modern battlefield weapon, but nothing made since Oct 1986 is legal to own in this country.
