“The response was quick and fierce. One of the terrorists that was involved or claimed responsibility disappeared—until his body was delivered to the organizations doorstep in pieces. Yes, pieces.
No Russian was ever kidnapped or harmed after that.”

That was back in the early 80’s, around Beirut I think. IIRC, the Soviets also delivered a couple of cassettes recording the sounds of the guy’s last hours too.

Anyone who thinks the Russians are going to be worried about civilian ‘collateral damage’ are going to be disappointed. They could care less about world opinion.

Exactly. Bill Casey reputedly tried to do something similar when our CIA chief for Lebanon,Bill Buckley, was kidnapped, tortured and eventually killed in 1983 by Hezbollah. In 1985 A car bomb was supposed to take out a Imam thought to have been in charge of Hezbollah, but it missed and killed a number of civilians instead.

However, the institutional memory of the CIA is long and eventually in 2008, they assassinated a man named Imad Mughnieh who they had sought for decades as the Hezbollah chief in charge of Buckley’s ordeal.
