Some directors have a sadistic side to them anyway, wanting to induce and witness suffering, just to study the effects academically. Alfred Hitchcock was notorious for that, from what I’ve read, especially with his pretty blonde actresses.
Kubrick is the master. Full Metal Jacket is my number two movie and The Shining is in my top ten.
