The why would he be screaming with his face contorted in pain?

Sometimes you see blood from the mouth, sometimes you don't. That was case even with other victims in this same episode.

And the zombies would just crawl under right after him like they always do when someone tries to crawl under something, like a car.

He was in a sort of way. At the end of the eulogy the words to the effect of "Please don't let it be true" were flashed over and over.
"He wasn’t a guest on The Talking Dead like every other major character that has been killed."
And the show itself said you shouldn't read anything into that. If they try to pull off some dumb deus ex machina to "save" him from an inescapable situation it will definitely cheapen the show.
As much as I hate it: he BETTER be dead.

I can’t see any logical scenario other than that being Nicholas’s body on top of his and something distracting the walkers/eaters and the herd in that alley. This gives Glenn time and room to escape. If you noticed when they were in the alley, there was a fire escape leading to a roof top. It was when they looked back at the herd closing in on them...See @ .14 seconds into this clip while they are on the trash bin...I dunno...just a thought.
He wasn't screaming, he was in total shock at what just happened........
He wasn't hit by the shot but rather was splattered with the guy's blood and knocked off the dumpster when the guy fell. And I suspect the guy fell on top of him and that's who the zombies are feeding on.
I don't think Glenn is dead............
