Norwegian chess phenomenon Magnus Carlsen yelled out faen!, a Norwegian expletive meaning literally the devil, and threw his pen down, after he lost his fourth match at the World Blitz Chess Championship in Berlin on Wednesday. <{p> Magnus Carlsen wins rapid chess world title (13 Oct 15) Chess genius Carlsen in crisis after fourth loss (26 Jun 15) The players use of the expletive, which translates more loosely as (profanity), left the polite and understated chess world mildly shocked.
It is reasonably unusual. It is certainly a breach of how one should behave, Ian Rogers, the Australian grand master and veteran chess journalist, told Norway's national broadcaster NRK. "I don't think Magnus would have done the same in a long chess game. It would have had far greater consequences."
After winning the world championship in rapid chess on Monday, Carlsen only managed sixth place in the blitz chess, the first time he has lost a world championship in more than two years.
Chess players are such thugs.
The guy on the right looks a little like Edward Snowden ...
Before we know it, we are going to hear that Bautista was cursing in Spanish at the umpire in tonight’s Royals and Blue Jays game. The horror.
I was a high school chess coach in Arizona for 6 years. I cannot recall a single instance of an outburst like this in a tournament.
My wife would get the “willies” she happened to attend the beginning of a round. A whole cafeteria full of high school players and while you waited for the tournament director to announce the start of play, you could literally hear a pin drop. Then dozens of clocks would be snapped to start them.
In fairness Blitz does require a different skill set.
His name is Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, French grandmaster.
Thank you, StormEye!
I play a fair game of chess, I was raised with it.
I had the opportunity one time to play someone really, really good. Not a grandmaster, but up there.
It’s quite humbling to be told what you’re trying to accomplish, while you’re trying to accomplish it, while your efforts are being negated and critiqued.
Casually, between sips of beer.
LOL!
The writer should have been in attendance at our usual senior pick-up softball game this morning if he wanted to see a breach in civility and language..............LOL!
I am a chess master and two time Washington State chess champion.
The last two times I beat my state’s current Attorney General (and likely next Governor and potential national political figure), he swept the pieces off the Board, cursed, and stomped off. He is, of course a Democrat. (In his defense, he was a teenager and then about 20 at the time of these games).
Chess players are undoubtedly about the oddest group of people you will ever run into.
Sure it is.
