Navy Yard shooter had odd episode in R.I. -- Told police lastmonth of voices, vibrations
He also etched messaages into the shotgun he used in the shooting. One side said "Better off this way" and the other "My ELF Weapon". ELF is an acronym for "Extremely Low Frequency", which is a type of communication used by the Navy to communicate with submarines. Here is a link to the CBS News story reporting these things:

After a bit the media settled on the "He was delusional" message, which they got from the FBI, and went with it.

The shooter, 34 year old Aaron Alexis, a Navy veteran receiving partial disability pay, wrote:
"Ultra low frequency attack is what I've been subject to for the last 3 months," read a message obtained by federal authorities from Alexis's thumb drives, phones and computers. "And to be perfectly honest, that is what has driven me to this."
