While it may not have the track record of those engines on this list, I’m thus far pretty enamored with the 3.6 liter Chrysler Pentastar in my 2014 Rubicon.

Just a few questions to see if that mill is in the running

Does the engine require only full synthetic oils?

Does the timing gears/chains need to be changed at a regular "service?"

How many TSB's have been issued for software problems?

Can you yank the engine and drop it in something else without changing every component known to man?

Can you drop the pan and pull the heads in anywhere other than an operating theater?

Sorry, I had a momentary HTML shortage

I think they were closer to this model.

That's not quite it, either. Can't seem to find exactly the one I'm looking for in Google images.

How about this? Image and video hosting by TinyPic One is a DCOF Toll Road and the other is just a DCOF. I'm not sure about which is which though

Amazing engine.

Yep, all I ever did to mine is change oil and filters.

Pulled heavy trailers with them, 40 footers loaded with tractors, hay and what nots.

So much power from a straight six

I am running the 6.7 now with 180k in an 07. First thing I did was rip the exhaust out before 5k and bypass all the BS and put a programmer on it for the bypass. Amped it up with the programmer only 70hp. Only dislikes, it is an automatic but was not going to do a 6 speed standard.

We will see how long it lasts because I love it and the inside is holding up nicely.

In the early 80s I bought a station wagon from my friend’s mom to grab the 390 to put in my 1950 F-1 Ford. It had over 200k on the motor, and the tranny was out; so I started to tear it down. The motor looked like it had just come out of the factory. Ended up just throwing in some seals, and it ran like a scalded dog until I sold it.

I did thrown on a high-rise manifold and a 750 double-pump. Top speed was only 90, but she hit that in around 8 seconds. You could actually watch the gas tank drain when punching it—six miles to the gallon was no big deal when gas was cheap!

My 390 is really fuelish, too. You’re right, gas mileage wasn’t a concern until the 70s.

Yes that first arab oil embargo in 73 really changed things. All of a sudden most every American knew where “Saudi Arabia” was on the map.

I sat next to a guy at work who was probably 6-4, 270 pounds.
He panicked and sold his Buick 225 for far below value and bought a Vega, soon to realize his terrible mistake.

and bought a Vega

Ouch. Actually, an attractive little car but a piece of junk. The Pinto was a piece of junk and ugly, too. No wonder by the mid-70s, most people were buying imports. Okay, I admit it, I had a Corolla by the late 70s.

Double fail for him.

Crappy car AND he didn’t fit inside hardly at all (the guy had a 80 mile round trip commute)

My ride in ‘73 was a Buick Electra 225 Limited. 434 w 4bbl. I made it through the shortage by treating the gas pedal like it was an egg. I still remember when the shortage ended and things got better.......... I floored it and never looked back......

Those were impressive chunks of iron & steel.
The guy I referenced was soon back in a Buick, in ‘75 I think.

Of course by then the resale on the Vega was nil, he was like the market investor that buys high and sells low.

18.5 feet long. I had it airborn once. I think in @’75 they went with a 455 (which may have been the pinnacle of displacement in a passenger car engine?). Just curious, was the right rear window of the Vega blown out?

I dunno.

I owned a couple of them (after the price of used ones was in the 200 dollar range), the window was one of the few problems I DIDN’T see.

Maybe I’m thinking of the Capri. A lot has happened since ‘73.

The Capri was German built Ford. Pretty good car IIRC, but relatively expensive for a small car.

Grew up on a farm in western Ks where we ran a ‘47 single axle grain truck till around ‘75. We put a rebuilt flat-head in it every few years. They came from AD Rayl Ford in Hutchinson, Ks. That old truck hauled a lot of wheat!
