Ship a cheap “very heavy” item . . . not much profit for the seller there . . . In my opinion they got greedy and have lost their appeal.

I think that came about because a lot of the electronics sellers were quoting a low price and a ridiculous shipping charge to beat the fees when there was no charge on them. In those days I'd see high-end VHS and/or DVD recorders being offered at $10 Buy It Now with a $70 shipping charge.

As another poster pointed out, making the Buy It Now price 30% over your opening price is stupid and self-defeating. Someone would REALLY want the item bad to fork out a 30% premium. GunBroker (firearms related) lets you have a BIN for 1c over, which prods the buyer into an instant decision instead of putzing around for seven days. They also have a 14-day auction that can run forever - auto relist until it sells. The downside, as with most other auction sites is that they don't have the wide customer base eBay does.
