The real tsunami machine of a subduction zone is found where the movement is concentrated near the surface when the ocean plate moves down and the land side “bounces” back. If I recall the upper side of the fault in the Boxing Day Tsunami moved some 8 meters when the tension which had been holding it up. So shallow quakes generally affect us more.
