SAT Scores Hit Four-Decade Low
Breitbart California ^ | 09/05/2015 | by Chriss W. Street

The most recent Census Bureau data reveals that of the $3.2 trillion in total expenditures by state and local governments in 2012, public education accounted for the highest percent at nearly 28 percent,

California is home to what appears to be the most wasteful K-12 spenders. ... 11 of California’s 16 most-populated cities score in the bottom 25 of U.S. cities on standard tests.

The worst performing cities have in common the very high percentages of households where English is not spoken as a first language. Research shows that the language barrier can have a disastrous effect on learning outcomes.

California, with the largest number of students, tops the English Learners category at 1,413,549. This constitutes about 22.7 percent of the total enrollment in state public schools. A total of 2,685,793 students speak a language other than English in their homes, a number that represents about 43.1 percent of the state’s public school enrollment, with 87 percent Spanish speakers.

The 73 percent majority of English learners are enrolled in the elementary kindergarten through grade six. About 27 percent are enrolled in the secondary grades, seven through twelve.

This seems to indicate that SAT scores will continue to decline as more students who do not speak English in the home pass through high school.

Former President George W. Bush’s No Child Left Behind legislation implemented in the 2000s amounted to an attempt to put a stop to unproductive spending by failing school districts. The measure required schools to meet certain performance criteria or risk being taken over or shut down, among other sanctions.

Although the rapid descent of SAT scores slowed during the Bush years, the Obama administration issued waivers and refused to enforce the No Child penalties. Since his inauguration, SAT scores have plummeted.

Especially with the studies they offer now, LGBTQ, ethnic, diversity, etc. Those studies don’t enable people to get a job, they just enable more community organizers and lefty political activists.

ACT is still around; that is the exam I took in 1967.

The SAT was taken by students who wanted to attend more exclusive public or private schools. A good number of state colleges and universities, especially in the Midwest used the ACT to judge if a student was capable of doing college level work.

Don’t worry, universal preschool will take care of that.

I wonder what might ever be the cause?

http://www.voxday.blogspot.ca/

It’s a source of mixed amusement and despair to see the media simultaneously celebrate a) a declining white population of American while lamenting b) declining average SAT scores.

Scores on the SAT have sunk to the lowest level since the college admission test was overhauled in 2005, adding to worries about student performance in the nation’s high schools.

The average score for the Class of 2015 was 1490 out of a maximum 2400, the College Board reported Thursday. That was down 7 points from the previous class’s mark and was the lowest composite score of the past decade. There were declines of at least 2 points on all three sections of the test — critical reading, math and writing.

The steady decline in SAT scores and generally stagnant results from high schools on federal tests and other measures reflect a troubling shortcoming of education-reform efforts. The test results show that gains in reading and math in elementary grades haven’t led to broad improvement in high schools, experts say. That means several hundred thousand teenagers, especially those who grew up poor, are leaving school every year unready for college.

One can only conclude that the journalists writing articles like these didn’t do very well on the SAT themselves. It’s not as if it’s any great mystery what happens when lower IQ populations are permitted to invade a higher IQ population; both England and Denmark have observed statistically significant decreases in average IQ since their immigrant populations began to grow.

Diversity is intrinsically opposed to Progress of any sort that involves a) technology, b) wealth, or c) quality of life.

I know how to increase the scores. Test them on sexual perversion, global warming, the evils of the U.S. Founding Fathers, and other leftist nonsense. That’s what the schools are teaching. That’s what they will score high on.

Don't lay all the blame on the teachers.

I retired last year along with the Language Arts teacher. She was told she could NOT teach grammar. She did anyway, sneaking in about 10 minutes in the middle of the class period.

I touched bases with the new science teacher who replaced me, and she was told they will not be ordering any new science textbooks, for that matter they will not be using any textbook in the future. All well and good if you have access to computers and the internet every class period, but they are lucky to get their hands of computers twice a week.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

Watch the states where pot is taking over.
The hell with being smart, get stoned.
No wonder they want sober foreign workers.

Not to worry.

There are ivy league scholarships waiting for all the minorities, with good submit jobs following.

And of course, if you are totally incapable and need support to do virtually everything, and if as a bonus you really believe Islam is a religion, there is always the presidency for you.

US public education may be failing miserably in terms of a classic education, but hey, they are wildly succeeding with political indoctrination and social engineering.

I was talking to my 8 yo grandson about his math homework and my daughter told him that his grandma had a degree in business administration and accounting so she had to study a lot of math. My 3 yo granddaughter said to me, “don’t study math grandma, it will make you sick!”. Gave me a good laugh.

Maybe the US needs to re-think the policy that every teen has to go on to College.

Going to college enables K-12 policy makers to cite the success of a K-12 education. Otherwise, hard questions will have to be asked about why a high school graduate is qualified for nothing beyond a minimum wage service job.
