The main attack against Trump is that he's a closet liberal. Issues like this are about the liberal-conservative divide, to be sure, but are a distraction from jobs, the economy, immigration, and Iran. Taking a public opinion on this will just fuel the fire. Even not taking a position will become a subject in the upcoming CNN debate anyway, so why not just wait until then to discuss it?
Trump has a rally next week with Ted Cruz and Glen Beck to highlight the Iran deal. Trump wants the campaign messaging to be about that, not gay marriage or religious persecution. It's unfortunate for Mrs. Davis that this is happening to her now, but that is not a demand on Trump to take a side on it now.

This is more than social issue, it is faith issue.
Now I am not stupid. Faith will flourish whether or not it gets conked on the head like this, in fact sometimes it seems to rise up in the very face of the punishment that is intended to destroy it.
