The correct expression is “Way out of LEFT field.”
When the pre-Wrigley Cubs played at West Side Grounds, there was an insane asylum across the street from the left field fence. Sometimes the patients were loud enough to be heard by the crowd in the park.
You’re probably right about that, but I also recall playing little league and the worst kid on the team would be put in right field, so you’d hear the expression you’re out in right field. Oddly enough, we had a fire ball pitcher, so when ever the ball was hit it would always go to right field.
