INDIANAPOLIS -- IndyCar driver Justin Wilson has died from a head injury suffered when a piece of debris struck him at Pocono Raceway. He was 37.
IndyCar made the announcement on Monday night at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

I think you are right. That piece of nose cone that hit him bounced off of his helmet and flew maybe over 50 feet in the air.
I am so sad. I cried over Dan Weldon and I am crying over Justin.
“I was at the Vegas race when Wheldon was killed”
That one hurt as well. Saw him at Indy qualifying a few years prior. Myself and my best buddy had pit passes, our last roundup as he was dying from mesothelioma, not much past 50 years old.
That kind of thought that too. But who knows.
Felipe Massa was hit in the head with a spring in F1 in 2009 I think and was very lucky to recover. He had eye injuries, required surgery, and there was speculation at the time whether he would even walk again.
Sources tell me he was basically dead at the track.
If you can lip read Mike Andretti speaking to Hunter-Reay in the winner circle, seemed to confirm that.
Kept on life support until wife, parents, and brother could fly in.
What does that even mean? Are you suggesting he would have survived at another hospital?
The emergency personnel at these races are first-rate. I have more trust in them than some random person at a keyboard on freerepublic.
What did you mean to accomplish with that post?
Eternal rest,Prayers for Justin Wilson and Family and Friends.
Rest in peace driver....
There would be so many challenges to that, though. The heat would be much more intense in a small closed environment, you’d have fogging and debris would hit the screen during the race...it’s very different than a large windshield like you get with Nascar.
I’m not opposed to closed cockpits, but how feasible they are in open-wheel racing I’m not sure. It can’t just be tradition that they are this way now.
Horrible, prayers for his family
R.I.P., Badass. We IndyCar fans may be few, but we will all miss you.
RIP Justin Wilson....
In a sport where rivalries are often intense and sometimes deeply personal, I cannot recall Justin ever saying an unkind word. And he made the best of the opportunities he had in the sport - after all, he even won races driving for Dale Coyne.
It’s a sad day for this IndyCar fan.
“Hinchcliffe got knocked out at Indy last year with a much smaller piece of shrapnel.”
In Hinch’s case, it was a suspension piece that penetrated the tub and then his leg. We wouldn’t have him anymore if it hadn’t been for the quick action of the safety team.
To his Family, Prayers, he was a Good Guy!
Godspeed lad.
Right. I lost a niece last week to a drunk driver. The truck driver parked in a truck stop and forgot to put the parking brake on. The truck rolled out onto the highway and smashed her car. He is charged with vehicular homicide.
Prayers for the Family PING
I don’t even know what to say...
Prayers up for him and the whole family. It’s still dangerous out there.
