Time to restore tariffs to everything imported. During the 19th Century, when the USA went from a weak former colony to become the strongest industrialized economy on the planet, the country maintained high tariffs on imported goods. Free trade to the founders meant the freedom to trade with any nation on the planet, not open markets. Before the early 20th century, the tariff fully funded the activities of the federal government. There was no personal income tax.
I don’t disagree, as long as we ELIMINATE some of the taxes the tariffs would replace. The selective tariffs brings us the law of unintended consequences.
