Not anymore. Microsoft has now announced the launch of Windows DVD Player. It is no WMC replacement and its full feature list is simply:
Windows DVD Player also wont play Blu-ray discs nor DVDs from file backups, it is 100% optical discs only. All of which makes it pretty limited, but this is just the start.
Microsoft states Windows DVD Player will only be free for a limited time but doesnt say how long this will be. Even the players FAQ simply says The timing has not been finalized yet. It will end at or before the free Windows 10 upgrade offer. Great.

After that unspecified time Microsoft will charge a hefty $14.99 for Windows DVD Player..

I just now saw your post. I’m not a rocket surgeon but I did help develop an internet-ready refrigerator as a proof of concept.
The idea was to couple a scanner tied to computer within the frig that would host a database. As you consumed food from the frig it would subtract the items from the database and place an order for replacements as needed.
An automated internet-based grocer would assemble the order and make deliveries.
A sort of nutty idea I admit but my contribution was merely as an engineer - I played no part in the conception.
