I have a Epson XP-620 which I bought for about $100 last year. I have had zero problems with it.

I use refill from http://www.4inkjets.com
Much cheaper then the OEM ink and it does not fade.

May have to take a closer look when my HP All in one dies. Meantime for $27 delivered I can get three sets of my full complement of five XL564 remanufactured cartridges with new ink level chips from eBay = 15 cartridges in total.

Still not worth it.

My local grocery can produce excellent photo prints for pennies, and my home laser printer can deal with simple color jobs and the toner for me lasts years.

The programmers responsible for shutting down black-ink printing when one of your color cartridges runs dry should all be fired, blackballed and tar-and-feathered.

This might be of interest to those folks who print a lot. The problem (as is the case with all ink-jet printers) is that if your printing is not regular enough, your ink can dry up. This really sucks given how much ink costs.

For myself, I print really infrequently, and don't need color at all, so I use a Brother (which is Linux Friendly) laserjet. I'll print for a couple of years or more off one cartridge.

These printers are very slow - 13ppm black and only 7 for color. Even the highest quality business version is only 20ppm. I can get an HP that goes 42ppm.

Our color laser recently died so I have been looking at printers for our home office with an open mind. The ink jet technology has changed in recent years, so you can get inkjets that are as fast as lasers. However, the ink is as expensive as laser for these, so it has to come down to quality and speed.

Store employees have told me that the quality of printers in general has gone down in recent years - that I should count on buying a new printer every couple of years! A look through Amazon’s reviews as well as different store reviews makes me wonder if there are any that are both trouble free and cost effective.

Because I am “Bookwoman” I frequently have to print out long manuscripts, many of them with color involved. While sometimes draft mode is fine, often I need things to be very high quality. I need a fast workhorse that won’t give me a lot of trouble. I am willing to pay up to $1000 for the printer if it is the right one. It has to be new enough to have Windows 10 drivers. I don’t need it to have all-in-one capability.

Any suggestions?

I was so excited when I saw this post - until I saw how slow the printer was.

About ten years ago I bought an Epson 1270 printer for around $500. It worked for around four years but the heads were always clogging if you didn't use it regularly and it finally died. In looking for a replacement, I read
A lot of forum posts on DPReview. It was suggested one should take a look at Sam's Club's photo department. I did and never got another photo printer. Sam's uses an Epson Stylus Pro 9000 series printer which runs in the neighborhood of $5k (about $1k of that is ink) and Fuji Semi-mat Pro paper. I get 16x20 prints for $7 and change and 20x30 prints for under &10.
I use a cheap referred Canon for around the house stuff.
