Republican Attorney General Brad Schimel, at a summit he convened last Wednesday on open government, stressed that Wisconsin's public records laws must not be weakened.
At the same time many of you were contacting elected representatives on Independence Day weekend, you were urging us to keep investigating until we found out who was responsible.
We've been doing just that with the aid of our open records law. On the same day Schimel held his open government summit, we reported on a new batch of emails.
They show it was Gov. Scott Walker and staff who added language exempting "deliberative process" documents from public records. This would have allowed elected representatives and bureaucrats to bury records revealing lobbying, opinions, analyses, recommendations, negotiations, suggestions and other notes that precede a decision.
No one had a whiff of what Walker, Vos and a few other party leaders were planning to do to the open records law until they inserted it into the state budget, at the last minute, on the night before a holiday weekend. We now know they had been working in secret on the changes for weeks, if not months.
You halted their plan.
When the public roared against limiting records access, Gov. Walker said it "didn't come from us."
The move appears to be no more than an attempt to avoid "political embarrassment," Esenberg said.
This is not a partisan issue. The people of Wisconsin want open, honest government.
It is not too much to ask. It is not too much to demand.

You know how much we admire how Obama and Hillary are always stonewalling and covering up, not cooperating by turning over records? Well , they aren’t the only ones. Buyer be ware.
It appears Walker may have lied to the public. I hope not.
Our resident lefty troll now using George Stanley and the JS as a source for attacking Walker LOL!
If you lived here like many others who have been calling out your bs articles you would have known the George Stanley and the JS have been complicit in trying to bring Walker down with fabricated stories.
But then using lefty media to try and prove your points about Walker is kind of your thing.
Have fun!
The purpose of these posts seem to be to convince us that Cruz is supported not just by intelligent people but also by at least some idiots.
Which is good news as he can’t win without the idiots too. After all they far outnumber the rest of us!
I remember seeing a post on this a few weeks back and pretty much sealing the deal for me to NOT SUPPORT WALKER.
Folks like you make me want to support even more the candidate you are attacking...
The Wisconsin Journal Sentinel is a Pulitzer prize winning publication. They are not going to print something that they do not have the documentation to prove. In this case, they have emails that prove that Walker nd his staff were working on the repeal of Wisconsin’s Open Records Laws for months.
Did you ever stop to consider that maybe the reason that their articles don’t always flatter Walker is that they report the facts and not the PR stuff he spouts?
Fox News and several other news outlets have reported this, but bury your head in the sand to keep your delusions if that is what you want.
I am Tired of sleazy, dishonest politicians and before we put another one in office, folks need to know what they are getting.
Keep denying it and I’ll keep posting more sources. Better yet, I encourage anyone interested to do their own search.
When you libs actually examine the two sets of grifter twins (Clintons and Dorkbamas), we can start talking about others.
Until then, STFU.
Is this one of the things that happened back during the Wisconsin Legislature thing where they ended the mandatory union membership for public employees and the protesters were occupying the capitol and threatening the families of legislators?
Sorry, but the Pulitzer belongs right down there in the cess pool of O’Obamastuff right with the Nobel Peace prizes,
Not buying it, oh silly liberal.
Let’s talk Clinton, Dorkbama....and then I’ll start listening to you, you pathetic little progressive.
Go back to comic books and the NYT.
That seems like a rational response. This guy is dirty and dishonest. Yeah, I want some more of That!
The Wisconsin Journal Sentinel is a Pulitzer prize winning publication.
And all that that implies. i.e. if the stakes are high enough, they will lie through their teeth.
Forgive me, FRiend, but: couldn’t you at least take the word of Wisconsinites (of which I am one) and accept the fact that the WJS is a liberal rag? The evidence is too much to deny, IMHO... and quoting it doesn’t help your case (nor does it make you look unbiased or discerning)...
No, this just happened. Walker attempted to attach a repeal of the Open Records Laws that have been law in Wisconsin for over a hundred years as part of the budget deal he just signed. He did this just days before his announcement for President.
This is the same thing that Slick Willie did in Arkansas just before he ran for President. Not something one does unless there is a lot to hide.

He seems like a more honest politician than most.
What part of the article do you disagree with? Are you saying that Walker did not try to repeal the Open Records Law? Multiple sources say that he did, including Fox news.
“The Wisconsin Journal Sentinel is a Pulitzer prize winning publication. They are not going to print something that they do not have the documentation to prove.”
Janet Cooke, reporter for the Washington Post won a Pulitizer Prize in 1981 for an article published by the paper in 1980. The store turned out to be a complete fabrication.
Jayson Blair was a journalist with the Pulitzer Prize winning New York Times. He resigned from the paper in 2003 after it was discovered a number of stories he had written for the paper had be plagiarized.
The Pulitzer Prize is no seal of journalistic integrity or excellence:
Refute if you can, the substance of the article. If it is untrue, there should be ample evidence to support what really happened, right?
The old attack the messenger rather than the message just looks weak.
You make Cruz look bad. Seriously. And I adore Cruz, so please cut it out.
