Walker, in a huge protracted fight, managed to take the lavish perks teachers made and make them a thing of the past. The “right” which was eliminated was ever expanding health plans which the teachers paid ZERO into. They now have to pay about 30% into the plan, and no longer are forced to join the teachers’ Union. (This was actually the meat of the whole matter.) Almost all of the agonizing was done to protect union bosses/leader jobs, which are now in decline.
Virtually no teacher lost a job, but all the districts which adopted the bill saw surpluses (where there had been huge deficits) and even increases in teachers’ salaries, while lowering local property taxes. State taxes were also lowered.
Sounds good to me.
