You don't have to wait for your win 10 "reservation", you can upgrade whenever you want by running this:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
Choose "upgrade this computer". This requires the latest version of 8.1 (or 7). You won't need to input a key. The download is about 5 gigabytes. This will keep all your programs installed and keep all your personal files. (you can do a fresh install after the upgrade if you want)
You can choose either express or custom install, I chose custom install and unchecked about 12 scary sounding privacy settings.
Overall my experience was painless and successful. I did have to manually upgrade my video driver to get things looking great, but that's minor and expected.
I strongly recommend "classic shell" for those familiar with the old style windows start menu.

Many people don’t like the Windows “tile” interface and prefer the old look with the Start menu. Windows doesn’t provide an option to re-enable the Start menu interface, so you have to use “Classic Shell”, a third-party utility, to get that look back.
LOL, ok not really. Win score is 8.1 and had to run it though a shell.
You can still run W98 on your W7 if you really want to. I had a new desk top built this year and it came with W7 x64.
I also run Win 2k on it for software the 64 bit won’t load and later will run W95 for some old 16 bit games.
I’m now running some very intense 64 bit CAD & Video software along side stuff meant for W95.
You need to download a free copy of vmware. It’s software that allows you to run other op systems such as W98 along with W7. I’ve read where Microsoft also offers software that allows running older op systems on a virtual machine.
I personally hated windows 8, thought win 8.1 was tolerable with start 8 installed, but I like windows 10 so far. It’s a lot faster on my system than 7
Ok, let’s discuss spoofery. What file do I need to download on my Win 95 machine to get the free upgrade? :-) Oh ok, I’ll check out bittorrent.
I currently run Win 7. I’ll stick with that for a few weeks to see if Any major issues come up. From what Imhave seen Win 10 looks good.
Er, make that Win 98.
I’m with you !!!!!!!!!!!!
don’t discuss that kind of thing here please
Thanks for the report. I’ll probably wait a few days to do this. I have 3 partitions one WinXP, one Windows 7 and the third already running Windows 10 pre release.
What are you on? Dial-up? I downloaded the whole thing in thirty minutes. It’s taking longer to install it than to get it from MS.
Updated this morning and generally OK. I was having driver problems and opted for a reinstall, but I will have to reinstall some applications. If I were to do this again I would backup my files and do a clean install. However, I am growing to like Windows 10
Can I disable One Drive? It pops up and asks for a password. I don’t use it for anything that I know of???? Thank you and yes, so far so good with WIN 10 today.
Simple really.
Thank you. Using it now to download on a Win 7 machine. Already did an upgrade to an 8.1 machine this a.m.
Now I have to click each page to see what's on it instead of seeing the preview.
This is a Huge time sink.
Any idea how to get this function back without trashing win-10 back to Win-7?
Try alt + escape
It’s not a perfect replacement but it’s not horrible either
I heard alt-tab is gone forever.
Better get a system image backup before installing. So far my venue 11 failed the upgrade. I had no network adapters despite them being installed in device manager.
I’m trying to upgrade my gaming system tonight. Hope it turns out better than the venue. I couldn’t even activate windows so I could clean install.
