'Ominous' black ring moves through sky over England

WEST BRIDGFORD, England, - A YouTube user shared video of a mysterious "huge black ring" flying over his house in Nottinghamshire, England.

The video, posted to YouTube by Pierce Smith, shows a black ring moving through the sky Thursday above Smith's home in Nottinghamshire.

"Huge black ring just drifted over my village," Smith wrote in the description of the video, which was titled, "Something weird flew over my house today."

Smith shared the video of the "ominous" ring on Reddit, where users commented it may have resulted from an electricity transformer catching fire.

"This is usually caused by a large transformer frying. I remember a similar video posted a while ago," Redditor Anonymoose98 wrote.

Other Redditors explained the ring may have kept its shape due to a phenomenon known as "laminar flow," which is also responsible for the slow dissipation of exhaust trails from jet engines.

I think it looks like a rather friendly ring, as opposed to an ominous one.

The cloaking device on the saucer got out of phase. Repairs are being made, and a memo has gone out to the rest of the fleet to check the settings. Nothing to worry about.

I saw plenty of these smoke rings during the Gulf War. They were caused by the oil well fires.

Back in the late 60’s, my brother had a 55 Ford wagon with dual exhaust that blew perfect smoke rings when idling. He used to buy that cheap paraffin based motor oil by the gallon at the Wigwam store.

Ok ....pretty cool phenomenon...

What makes it (cue the spooky music) “ ominous “ ?

Now if there was one like that in the shape of the Star of David, the Muslim world would freak out - as well as many others.

Followed by thousands of bumper stickers floating down from the sky with the words I recently saw: “God’s back, and BOY, is he mad!”

:-)

Dammit, I told uncle Marty to stop blowing smoke rings!

There used to be a billboard in Times Square which advertised "Camel's" cigarettes by blowing smoke rings over the crowded sidewalks. The rings were produced by a smoke generator which feed smoke into a box built into the sign. It had had a circular hole in the side of the box which was aligned with the smoker's mouth facing the street, opposite the hole the box had a flexible membrane which was struck rather like a bass drum except the "drummer" was a motor driven cam. The membrane produced a pressure pule when struck which propelled a smoke ring into the air over the street.

I've seen similar phenomenon as dolphins were playing in a large tank of water by expelling air from their mouth which produced a ring of bubbles which formed a rotating torus that held together as it moved a surprising distance. The dolphins would chase after the ring and try to catch it with their heads. It looked like children playing "ring toss".

You can make a smoke generator by carefully opening a pack of cigarettes and slide the cellophane wrapper about halfway off the pack. Use a lit cigarette to burn a hole through the cellophane about half way between the bottom of the pack and the closed end of the wrapper. Blow some smoke through the hole to fill the cellophane chamber, set the pack down on a flat surface with the hole facing up. Gently tap the cellophane away from the hole, you should see a smoke ring with each tap.

When the cellophane is tapped it propels smoke filled air through the hole where the particles commence to rotate about the annular axis of the torus and also move directly away from the source.

I haven't a clue as to why this seems independent of the medium (smoke, air bubbles, &c). There have been sightings in the south west of high altitude jet contrails described as "a string of pearls". UFOlogists have advanced the theory that USAF was testing the Aurora (next generation Mach 7 aircraft). They might actually be right for a change!

Regards,
GtG

The herald of the Aesir (Norse Gods) who guards Bifrost, the Rainbow Bridge. I think, though the other poster was referring to the comic book/movie version from the Thor comic books and movies which put Asgard at the end of some sci-fi type dimensional portal rather than the mythological rainbow-as-bridge.

Interesting. Didn’t know any of that. Thanks. I am writing a children’ fantasy book and am interested in that type of information.

is that in Texas? The fortified water tower looks familiar.

Don't know about Texas however, here in SE Wisconsin they are quite common. Most of the older towers used some form of steel lattice work to support the tank. Given that they are periodically exposed to tornado force winds it seems prudent to use a larger diameter concrete structure to support the load. The closest "fortified water tower to my home has a roll-up garage door big enough to store a large truck, that could be a cost saving for the water utility.

There are some towers around our area that look like a gigantic gulf ball sitting on an enormous tee. The construction is all fabricated arc welded plate steel with the support tube being much smaller then the fortified concrete design, perhaps the smaller tube reduces wind loading but opens the door for vortex shedding. I don't know which is better plate steel or concrete.

I know that older tanks supported on small diameter tubular legs, with truss like bracing also small diameter have dramatically failed. That could also be due to lack of maintenance (corrosion is not your friend).

Regards,
GtG

PS Texas is no stranger to tornado winds either.
