Gas grills don't make me sick, and I have been able to cook on them.(not well, and just simple meats, but still...)

I live a block and a half away from a restaurant that BBQs their menu meats every single day.
It hasn't ever made me sick. But it's a bit of a distance away, and even when I drive by, the fumes are not the same.

But back to this article topic, the local “ordinance” in this case (from other sources I've read) require multiple complaints before any LEOs are even sent out to even investigate.
