As Townsend Whelen, former U.S. Army colonel and American Rifleman contributor, was once famously quoted as saying, Only accurate rifles are interesting. Employing that rubric alone, the Ruger Precision Rifle is a supremely interesting firearm. And, to the companys credit, the introduction of additional evaluation criteria such as versatility, reliability and value only make its newest bolt-action repeater all the more intriguing. Featuring sub-minute-of-angle accuracy, the dependability of a bolt gun built on the gunmakers proven American action, all the modularity of the über-customizable AR-15 platform, the ability to accept a multitude of magazine types and a price tag that is a literal fraction of many of the guns it will compete against on the market, Rugers latest foray into the long-range precision shooting field should pique the interest of a broad range of gun aficionados.
Sturm, Ruger & Co. believes that within the gun world there exists a sizeable segment of shooters who are interested in long-range precision shootingthey just have never been able to justify taking the plunge due to the typically astronomical cost of purchasing a gun designed expressly for that purpose. With an MSRP of $1,399and a likely eventual selling price closer to $1,100the Precision Rifle represents Rugers invitation for these cost-conscious gun buyers to finally enter the world of long-range shooting.

I was thinking that too when I read that. I thought, well I can do that with my old savage 30.06.
Ruger is first rate in terms of quality and price.
Ah, yes. The black scary looking assault bolt action rifle. Let’s hyperventilate heavily and try to ban the evil looking thing immediately!!
According to the link at post 23 they were getting 1/2 MOA at 800 yards with factory ammo. Not bad.
Damned Ruger! Just about the time I think I don’t need any more guns they come out with something (AGAIN!) that makes me question that decision. And this one has 5R rifling too. It’s going to be a tack driver.
I’ve got a Savage Model 110 that holds minute of angle at 300 right out of the box. It came with a Nikon BDC mounted at the factory, chambered in .308. It cost me about $450 or so out the door at Cabelas IIRC.
Haven’t had a chance to shoot it at longer ranges but I’ll bet I could hit a man sized target at 500 with some time to dope it in correctly.

Go to Ruger’s site and open the exploded drawings of this rifle. It is essentially their American Rifle in a factory Chassis/stock, albeit a very adaptable and adjustable stock. Appears that the trigger assembly and the bolt and receiver are straight out of the American Rifle. This is basically a $350 rifle in a $1000 stock. The regular American is MUCH cheaper and shoots just as well in my experience.
What’s that little stubby thing where the magazine goes? ;)
Thank you
I want one of these in .308!
Circa 2000 model year.
Out of the box it shoots .76 inches at 100yds with 180gr Noslers.
Can't beat that with a stick.
$799 new.
Yeah, it's a Featherweight. That light barrel allows it to like ONLY ONE bullet weight. I guess I got lucky:)
That’s an awesome rifle! I own many Ruger handguns... need to get a nice rifle and tis may be it.
Thanks for the info!
Bipods and monopods, meh!

My local gun store has a sale at $1000, regular price $1100. I imagine you local store is similarly priced for now.

My Sporter cost me around $200 and meets my needs very nicely taking care of the rare snake and annoying my sister no end. She hates it when I let my nieces and nephew target practice.

It is always fun to go out with the 10-22 and then start shooting this one when no one is looking. That first 44 always wakes everyone up. It is a sweet brush-gun. One of my first loves.
