We've got a North Carolina Upper Coastal Plain sandy loam over a clay base. I am growing veggies in what was formerly a patch of yard, so I helped it out this year with three bags of Miracle-Gro garden soil over the little patch where the peppers are, and tilled it in. Also I did a light application of Ironite fertilizer with minerals, because I thought I might have had a trace nutrient deficiency.
We've had a pretty jungly summer here so far, alternating between too hot and rainy, and too hot and dry. Our last good rain was about a week ago, and if it gets too dry between times I wet down the garden thoroughly with the hose.
