Businessman Donald Trump today announced that he is officially running for the Republican nomination for president. Trump has previously indicated he is pro-life on the issue of abortion.
I am officially running for president of the United States and we are going to make our country great again, Trump said in remarks this morning at New York Citys Trump Tower.
Trumps entry into the race makes him the 12th Republican to seek the nomination, following pro-life former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, who announced on Monday. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and Ohio Gov. John Kasich are other pro-life Republicans expected to join the crowded field.
Trump has indicated he is pro-life on abortion. Earlier this year, he repeated that.
Im pro-life and I have been pro-life, Trump says. Its an issue and a strong issue.
In 2011, Trump has said numerous times that he is pro-life on abortion and that he changed his views from supporting abortion to pro-life based on his relationships with close personal friends who had children. Their pregnancy experiences, Trump maintains, allowed him to mature on the abortion issue to the point of now opposing abortion.
In an interview with the Des Moines Register newspaper, Trump expanded on those comments.
If you look at it, I said, It really, really troubles me, and it really, really bothers me, the whole concept of abortion. This was years ago, and even then it really bothered me, but I went on the other side of the line, Trump said. But in thinking about it over the years, Ive had instances, and one instance in particular, a friend had a child who they were going to abort, and now they have it, and the child is incredible. And the man, he changed his views also because of that.
As Ive grown older, as Ive seen things happen in life, Ive changed my views and others have also, he said.
Trump said he believes abortion should only be legal in the very rare cases when a woman is pregnant by rape or incest or when the life of the mother is jeopardized by the pregnancy.
Ronald Reagan had the same basic stances I had, and I absolutely believe in the three instances of exception, he said. I hope that I can convince Iowans that I will be the best to save our country, and the fact is, I am pro-life.
To be clear, in his own words in the YouTube video at post #29, Trump stated the following concerning Abortion:
He is Pro-life except in the cases of Rape, Incest and Life of the mother.
He also stated that if a woman was pregnant and wanted to get an abortion, it all depended on “When”.
JANUARY 2015
Trump was asked about a woman being pregnant, and not from rape or incest, and Trump answered that it depends on how far along the baby is.
It depends when
INTERVIEWERSo say a woman is pregnant, and it is not in any of those exception [rape/incest]categories, and she chooses to have an abortion TRUMP it depends when, it depends when
Keep complaining when someone agrees with one of your positions.
You’ll win tons of people to your side that way.
Good job.
Trump doesn’t agree with our pro-life position, or the GOP pro-life platform.
Do you also disagree with the party platform on abortion?
Uh, that’s an issue for me.
"Okay, I said earlier today he was pro-choice. I will accept this as a true change of mind on the matter and accept his assertion that he is pro-life."
And now you are asking if I am a Christian?
You are kind of proving my point. You are looking to tear down. You are wanting to prove impurity on every single person who you haven't already determine meets your standards.
How is your behavior, your statements, your attitude going to convince a single person that you have an argument worth considering?
THINK!!!!
When we have lost two Presidential elections in a row to the most liberal, anti-Christian President to ever hold the office, it means we haven't convinced people of our arguments!
We need to convince people!!
When the most public and talked about politician on the news, the one that everybody is talking about, says he is pro-life in a very public way, that is a very positive thing!
It will get some people to say "Well if Donald Trump is pro-life, maybe it isn't just a position of people that I considered fringe."
But, but, but.... he isn't pro-life. He... he... he... doesn't hold 100% views of pro-life like I do.
So what? Most people don't go from "No restriction on abortion ever" to "All abortion is murder" overnight, or even over a few years time.
Most people who were pro-abortion in their 20s find their change to pro-life take decades, and children, and sometimes grandchildren. They slowly realize how horrible abortion really is.
But even if Trump is lying 100%, why shoot at him when he is saying something that helps the pro-life cause?!?
It makes no sense. It's stupid behavior. Just say "I'm glad Mr. Trump said that, I hope he comes to be ever stronger as a pro-life advocate, and I hope that his conviction holds up to the pressure of our culture."
But being reasonable and persuasive doesn't fit the purity mold, does it?
I won't be lying to pro-life conservatives, in an effort to sell a pro-abortion liberal to them.
In other words, you have no interest whatsoever in trying to win people to the pro-life side.
Well done.
In other-words you are so “pro-life” that you will lie to promote a pro-abortion candidate for president.
Personally, not being insane, I will promote a pro-life conservative.
The same folks who are trashing Trump will end up doing the same thing to Cruz...just give it time. There will be no candidate pure enough, conservative enough, or smart enough for some here.
I’ll make a prediction here: Not only are we going to lose the House and Senate, but the presidency also. The Dems have nothing to worry about. We’ll destroy our own candidates thank you very much.
Im glad Trump is out there POing the GOPe and the other libtards but I’ll never vote for him.
You are as dishonest as the rest of the Trump crowd, the Cruz fans are the pro-life conservatives who are dumping on your pro-abortion/gun banning, democrat candidate, whose favorite president is Bill Clinton.
First, I’m a huge Cruz supporter, but I love what Trump is doing. He’s bringing up issues nobody else will touch and making the Dems and the GOPe squirm...this is a good thing.
Secondly, FReepers will indeed turn on Cruz before or just after the primaries. He’ll do something or say something that the most pure among us will not agree with, therefore making him not conservative to be trusted with this office.
Thirdly, it’s interesting that Cruz has defended Trump, and folks like you are continually are continually trashing him.
I love how you continually ascribe positions and motives to others.
See post 54, you are making up nonsense, in an effort to boost the pro-abortion. gun banning, Bill Clinton loving, Reagan disliking, Trump, who switched to the party of Al Gore in 2001.
No, actually I’m not. As others have observed, you simply lack reading comprehension skills and appear a bit paranoid.
You are a real nutcase.
I can read your posts, they are nonsense and contradict the facts and reality, but you think it helps Trump to attack Cruz supporters and conservatives, so you post it anyway.
All polidiots flip-flop, Cruz included.
You are a nut.
