Baltimore mayor fires police chief after sharp rise in violence

BALTIMORE — Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said Wednesday that she has fired Police Commissioner Anthony Batts, 2½ months after riots broke out in the city following the death of a man who was injured in police custody. Rawlings-Blake announced her decision in a three-paragraph news release that also noted she has named Deputy Police Commissioner Kevin Davis as interim commissioner. The mayor scheduled a news conference with Davis for later Wednesday afternoon. Rawlings did not give a reason, but the move comes amid a spike in the city’s homicide rate.

I read elsewhere that the ex-commissioner came to Baltimore from Oakland, where he left under a cloud of accusations that he was too weak in dealing with the riots in Oakland.
The irony, of course, is that the Baltimore mayor who fired him is the one with such an incredibly weak response to the Baltimore riots.

Under Batts, homicides decreased 45% and overall crime decreased 13% in Long Beach. Batts has said that he was motivated to seek the Oakland Chief of Police job by the aftermath of the killing of four Oakland police officers in March, 2009. On October 11, 2011, Chief Batts announced that he was resigning from the Oakland Police Department in November. In a letter to Oakland city workers, he stated "It is with great regret that I tender this official notice of my intent to resign as chief of police for the city of Oakland." Batts became the police commissioner of the Baltimore Police Department on September 27, 2012.

And take the prosecutor with her. If she was smart she would leave the country. The lawsuits those officers have against her and the City of Baltimore will leave her spinning.
