Arafat could say that because he had won the Vatican's support for his terroristic strategy. On June 26th, 2015, the Vatican signed its first treaty with the “State of Palestine”. It is the logical conclusion of a long path.
When the pontiff John Paul II ascended to the Temple Mount in 2000, Judaism’s most holy site, he wasn’t welcomed by Israeli officials, but by representatives of the Palestinian Authority, and the holy complex was bedecked in Arab flags. The Bible says that a Jewish temple will be rebuilt and be functioning during the last 7 years of this age, known as the "Tribulation period" and "the time of Jacob's trouble". The scriptures seem to indicate however that Israel will still not control the Temple Mount, making it possible that the Vatican could play a major role in future Temple Mount control.
Rebuilding the temple may very well be part of the 7 year agreement that the Anti-Christ makes with Israel in Daniel 9 and Isaiah 28, then in the middle of the 7 year agreement, goes into the temple and proclaims himself as God (2 Thess 2)

The secular government of Israel is officially committed to keeping the Temple Mount OUT of Jewish hands.
This Pope isn't more of a Judaism-hater than previous Pontiffs, he's more of a socialist and is just aping the socialist approach to the Holy Land.

I’m hoping that the muslim excavations in ridding themselves of Hebrew reminders, bring the whole thing crashing in on top of them...for which the Israelis would immediately be blamed. But at least we’d all be rid of those heaps currently bivouacked up there.
