MONTREAL — The United States advanced to the World Cup final on Tuesday with its most impressive performance in recent memory, notching a 2-0 victory over a top-ranked German team that had steamrolled its way to the semifinals.
The Americans, who looked discordant in the early parts of the tournament, seem to be peaking at the perfect time. They looked harmonious and controlled play against the favored Germans for large stretches of the match at Olympic Stadium.
Carli Lloyd, who had scored in the team’s two previous wins, put her stamp on yet another night, scoring on a penalty kick in the 69th minute and providing the game-killing assist on Kelley O’Hara’s goal 15 minutes later.
The United States will find out its opponent on Wednesday, when Japan plays England in Edmonton.

A lot of skillful play and a little luck = a well deserved win. Now to see who they’ll play in the final.
Germany held off the US in the first half, and was pushing hard in the early second when the referee, rather than make it a 11 on 10 against the US with the foul in the box, made it 12 against 11 in favor of the US by giving the US a freebie (for the foul/dive outside the box).
I doubt many Germans (or impartial fans for that matter) feel the better team necessarily won.
Morgan was wrestled down deep in the box at the end of the first half. Nothing was called. That was a clearer foul than either of the PKs that were awarded.
US had absolutely no attack! They got the ball down there and could not finish. Morgn was mostly useless. Rapinoe was a tireless worker, Carli L delivered, and o’hara the sub closed it. US needs to find attackers with ball control....sorely lacking! Take the win ladies....momentum is with you.
Germany choked on their PK and the US women outplayed and out hustled the Germans all night.
The German women looked horrible in the first half.
The US women are peaking at the right time and made great substitutions tonight.
I don’t think “roared” was an apt description as to how the US advanced; on the other hand, Germany should have made a better case by scoring more.

Sorry Kearnyirish2, but that was definitely a foul on Morgan. She had a clear chance to run the ball down after she pushed it by the defender. The initial contact does not determine whether the foul was in the box or not. That was determined when she took her down an instant later, well inside the box. That was not a dive. There was strong contact made.
Both the German Defender and Johnston were flirting with “straight red” Cards. Probably well ref’d by not issuing them in either instance.

I always used to poo poo soccer as a game for sissies. Until I was asked to photograph charity games between alumni of local high schools from field level.
The game is still dull as heck to me but I have a HUGE appreciation for all the tumbles and tackles the players take.

We were down this path 4 years ago ( just after the Fukushima earthquake devastated Japan ).
WE lost by penalty kicks.
If Japan defeats England, we’ll be facing the same team and could possibly have our revenge...
Germany missing the PK was ridiculous, but they were looking good at the start of the second half. I generally don’t watch soccer outside of the World Cup (the men), but I watched the game tonight because I was under the impression these were the two best teams (the real “final”, so to speak). The rules of the game itself guarantee that exciting games are few & far between. I played as a kid, and my town had three starters on the US team when we hosted the World Cup in ‘94, but it is just more fun to play than to watch (like hockey or basketball).
The excitement from the 1999 victory led to two failed attempts at leagues for women; it is just a slower variation of the men’s game. Most fans simply follow their own “teams” (in Europe or South America) via cable packages.
Soccer is for a bunch of girls. Oh wait. Good job!

Benching Abby is a decision that should have been made three years ago. I am a great Abby Wambach fan, as she used to play here in DC and is a classic, classy, good sportsman type as a player. And no one has forgotten that she is the all-time leading scorer in international soccer. But all good things come to an end, and she has slowed with age. The team is plodding when she's in the game, and doesn't apply nearly as much pressure.
Given that they were playing the #1 team in the world, the U.S. was quite impressive in all phases of the game tonight, save two: their continuing inability to finish; and their failure to convert on an abundance of corners. They simply do not shoot the ball very well.
I thought the women played a little too soft at times....too many chances for Germany in the 2nd half...
but they won...and now its on to the championship game
and the stamina....
Tonights game was one of the best I have seen during this years women's world cup. There were plenty of scoring chances for both teams and I did not think the US women would beat Germany but they did fair and square in my humble opinion
I don't see the Women's World Cup ever getting as popular as the Men's World Cup but I appreciate their play and they are every bit as physical as the Men! The Germans should have been given a few more yellows tonight, again IMHO.
A female friend who plays in an adult night league here in NJ laments the lack of interest in women’s soccer by other women. The Copa America undoubtedly is a much higher level of soccer.
The fact that so many of the players on other teams actually play for American colleges indicates this will be a “white peoples’ sport” for the foreseeable future; I know there are African teams involved, but my African co-workers couldn’t be bothered to watch. After seeing passes to nobody, turnovers that made no sense, etc. there is simply no comparison with the mens’ game.
