Chris Squirethe bassist, vocalist, and founding member of Yesdied last night following his battle with leukemia, according to a statement from the band. Since he started the group with Jon Anderson in 1968 until he was diagnosed with Acute Erythroid Leukemia in 2015, Squire was the only constant member of the group. He was 67.
Squire grew up in central London, where, in 1964, he was suspended from school for having long hair. He played in a few bands in the 1960s, including the Selfs, the Syn, and Mabel Greer's Toyshop. It was through that last band that he met Jon Anderson. The two bonded over Simon and Garfunkel's music. They formed Yes and released their debut album in 1969.
Squire later released solo records and was a member of the short-lived supergroup XYZ, which featured Squire, Yes' Alan White, and Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page.
Yes' statement reads:
For the entirety of Yes existence, Chris was the bands linchpin and, in so many ways, the glue that held it together over all these years. Because of his phenomenal bass-playing prowess, Chris influenced countless bassists around the world, including many of todays well-known artists. Chris was also a fantastic songwriter, having written and co-written much of Yes most endearing music, as well as his solo album, Fish Out of Water.
Outside of Yes, Chris was a loving husband to Scotty and father to Carmen, Chandrika, Camille, Cameron, and Xilan. With his gentle, easy-going nature, Chris was a great friend of many
including each of us. But he wasnt merely our friend: he was also part of our family and we shall forever love and miss him.
He was a very influentual Bass player.
A lttle more of our boomer youth just slipped away.

B.B. King; Errol Brown (of Hot Chocolate); Ben E. King; Lesley Gore; Joe Cocker and Paul Revere (of Paul Revere & The Raiders), all dead, dead, dead. And never coming back. At least in this world.
Johnny Winter, Lou Reed, and Phil Everly, none of those guys are coming down for breakfast anymore. And Ray Manzarek of The Doors - he's sipping his whiskey straight these days with Jim Morrison up in Purgatory someplace while "Riders In The Storm" play on the jukebox.
The list of the rock dead go on and on. Bob Welch of "Ebony Eyes" and pre-famous Fleetwood Mac, dead, dead, dead. Donna Summer and Robin Gibb of the BeeGees, both dead. Maurice Gibb is dead and little Andy too. Only Maurice is "Stayin' Alive".
One of the Beastie Boys is dead whose name I can't remember. And that drummer from that one band whose name I also can't remember is also dead.
Ronnie Montrose is dead and Davy Jones of the Monkees too. Also, we have Johnny Cash, Amy Winehouse, Juice Newton, Tina Marie and Laura Branigan, dead, dead, dead and dead.
The casualty list goes on and on, Andrew Gold; Johnny Preston, Ronnie Dio and Doug Fieder of The Knack, who shall belt out My Sharona no more. Remember when the Knack was going to be the next Beatles? Speaking of Beatles, half of them are dead and if Paul doesn't get some protein soon, he'll be joining them.
Gerry Rafferty - I tip my beer glass to you.
I can go on and on with the rock dead but I'll stop here.
I saw them in 2014, and had seen then a few times before. Squire and Howe both very much still had it. A real loss.
Yours in no disgrace

my very first album was Fragile
Lord please embrace Chris as he comes to you. His music was and will always be a constant companion to many as we travel through this life. As our beloved artists and rebels are slowly coming home to you we will not forget them, and we will embrace those that are still with us. Nous sommes du soleil... we loved when you played, Chris.
Libeling Fool.
Lighten up, Francis - “Scotty” is a male name...and who in the hell names a child Scotland.
By the way, John Wayne's real first name is Marion.
Don't make assumptions based on a name alone.
