and the greens are in horrible condition.”

Well it was a links course. Reminds me of the greens we played on last week in Mississippi as well as the greens many of we duffers play on most of the year. Thought it was interesting to hear them complain. Tested their real golfing ability and some of them came up woefully short in the ability to adjust department.

Five under is a fairly typical score for a US Open Champion. The USGA wanted a course in the northwest, which hadn't hosted an Open and they wanted a public course.

Yep, Dustin three putted 18; really his putter cost him way before that. Jordan doubled 17. Brendan Grace hit OB to double 16. They all had their chances. Jordan had a hole to make up his major mishap. Dustin was out of holes when his bit him.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I thought it was a great tournament. Anyone who thinks this place was a goat ranch should tune in next month for the British Open at St Andrews.

I like Jordan Speith, and I'm happy with the outcome.

It’s not a goat ranch - it’s a links course. Good practice for St. Andrews. Wish they had more tournaments on links courses. Anyone can score better on manicured fairways and greens. Takes a good golfer to score well on a links course.

To add a few comments to my previous post...

While I enjoyed the tournament, Fox's coverage was a huge step down from what CBS provides at the Masters, although you have to grant that the Masters crew is very experienced, and this is Fox's first go.

Greg Norman, in particular, was a poor choice for a commentator. His sidekicks... Brad Faxon, Corey Pavin, etc. were not much help.

Fox should see if Tom Watson is interested. I think he'd be lively and informative.

Dustin didn't "give" him anything. Johnson had been missing putts all day. Spieth double bogeyed the 17th while Johnson birdied it to bring it to a tie. One of them had to birdie the 18th to win or it went to an 18th hole playoff. Spieth stepped up with a birdie and "took" the hole. Dustin didn't.

The US Open is about pressure and skills and patience. The best player floats to the top. Johnson and the rest of the field had their chances but when their time came, they didn't have what it took to win. Spieth did. Spieth had already won the Masters this year. Only the sixth player in history to win both these two majors in the same year. "Give" the man his due. Spieth won the tournament fair and square like a true champion.

Exactly what the US Open is designed to do. Test the skills of the best players. Not make it easy for them but to make it difficult.

To gauge the difficulty of the US Open, just listen to all these pampered pros whine and moan and complain about how unfair the course is. Those guys won't win. Only the guys that persevere and are patient to the end, win this major. If it was easy, everybody would do it.

US Open scores are notoriously close to par. Usually low scores are not in abundance. There were only 8 players who finished under par in this tournament. Spieth's 5 under was superb for this course. Congratulations to him.

...those 3 put me to sleep. Very dull. The course was unattractive. It’s surroundings, beautiful.

that person happens to be Wayne Gretsky’s daughter. Maybe Johnson choked because his father in law aka the Great One was there watching.

I too thought it was an amazing tournament. Yes the greens were a complete joke (see Snedeker, B.) even by links course standards, the bottom line was every player had to play the same course in the same conditions and Jordan Spieth did it better than anyone else.

Did I get tired of seeing 5 foot putts wobble incoherently even though they were struck perfectly - Yes.

Did the fact that the two grasses caused players playing late in the day more trouble than those playing early bother me - Yes.

But the ingenuity and shot making required of all the players more than made up for the drawbacks of the greens. Watching players hit shots to places no sane person would so the ball would roll around and back to where they wanted it was actually golf shot-making at its very best.

Kudos to the USGA for having the balls to put the Open on a links course. And Kudos to Chambers bay for providing a venue that tested the mettle of the very best in a totally unique way!

Now, about those ridiculous Greens Fees (albeit not Pebble Beach ridiculous)......

I really thought Jordan blew it on 17. His comeback on 18 was phenomenal. I still expected to see a playoff today. Still can't believe DJ 3 putted on 18 after getting on in 2. Great round.

I watched it all. Too hot here to do anything outside but I have to agree with your assessment on the course and the commentators. I like Fox Sports for the NFL but their golf and baseball coverage is the absolute worst on TV, IMnotsoHO.

Yes it was a great finish for the fans. It did look like it was destined for a
playoff today. I’m sure the ups and downs to the players involved was like a
roller coaster ride.

I don’t think it was a green issue for Johnson on 18.

Compare his birdie putt on 17 with the miss on 18, I thought his left shoulder lifted slightly on 18 while remaining still on 17. That slight movement pulled the ball left.

I was looking forward to a playoff today, but with Spieth winning to keep a grand slam possibility going.

A suggestion I would make is to get rid of whomever that female is that does the interviews. Just awful.
