So, I've decided on the handgun I'm going to buy. Opinions? (Vanity)

After doing due diligence researching a high quality, yet affordable, handgun for concealed carry purposes (as well as the first handgun I will own) I've decided on the Smith & Wesson M&P Shield.

I'm still not sure if I'll go with the 9mm or .40. Any ideas on that?

Like I said, this is my first ever handgun purchase, having owned only rifles and shotguns in the past, so I think this will be a fine starter handgun for a middle aged rookie.

I know FR is populated with experts and I greatly value your opinions. Please advise. Thanks.

That’s a pocketful, ain’t it?

Not really. Recoil is very manageable, but I do practice quite a bit.

I appreciate what you are saying.

I just meant for a carry weapon it’s gotta be a little large.

Don’t get me wrong. The bigger the better if a guy can make it work.

Sorry, I was unclear. The XDS is my usual carry piece. It’s a single stack 5+1 in the .45 ACP variant. The Commander has become my BBQ gun. LOL.

For more formal occasions I have a Commander length Kimber.

Best,

L

Yep that’s what they say about .223 FMJ. Probably not so much with expanding hunting rounds.
22 Rimfire, never heard anything about tumble before even on Long Rifle rounds.

More folks killed by 22 likely due to sheer number of cheaper 22 caliber rimfire guns.

I shoot a Ruger SR Compact .40, it is definitely manageable even for my Better Half.

Sheer numbers is probably part of it, but the advantage of being able to rapid-fire accurately is also a major factor. Finally, the Mafia like to use the 22 for back-of-the-head executions. ;>)

No, you taught me something today.

I had no idea the XDS .45 acp was such a compact piece.

I picked up the XD .40 subcompact some years ago and really didn’t look into the rest of the XD line, until now.

Best to you as well.
