The attentive folks will notice that the current crop of government employees has adopted the attitude (and not without reason) that the people are not a moral or religipous people, and therefore, heavy-handed government is appropriate.
Election depends on not telling the people they deserve to be controlled with a heavy hand, so the fact of the matter (that we are an immoral people) is hidden and denied. All to the benefit of the ruling class, which, in order to continue to feel okay about being heavy-handed, has to maintain an immoral populace without telling the populace that it is out of control.
