So Neanderthals were making fires 400,000 years ago, but we’re still expected to believe that they were all stupid back then and had no ability for abstract thought?

No.

Neanderthals believed that their God was all powerful and that their ancestors were wise. Neanderthals hunted, and built, and raised their children to be smart and survive.

Indians (natives) in the Americas were similar. Both were wise.

Now, modern civilization believes in the Easter Bunny, that the Universe was an accident, that their ancestors were idiots, and raise their children to be the same.

As further proof that modern humans are the stupid ones, there are many places on the earth that contain architecture which we cannot duplicate today, nor even explain how they were accomplished.
