A bit of Colorado pot history:
Before legalization, pot prices in Colorado were about $250 per ounce.
When they went to legalize and establish pricing to see how much tax revenue could be created, they inflated the price to $300 per ounce. This was quietly celebrated by the pot growers (who now get to gouge the out of town people for an extra fifty bucks an ounce) as well as by the government (who now had a base price of 300, which they proceeded to tax an additional 100 per ounce.)
So, in a nutshell, by opening the door to legalization, the prices shot up from about $250 an ounce to about $400 an ounce.
Bear in mind, it is the END USER who buys at those prices. The people who sell pot typically look to make some sort of profit for selling pot, so they are looking to buy at a cheaper price then the end user.
Considering that across the rest of the country, prices on the black market tend to range from 200-250 an ounce (like Colorado before the legalization) it means that, to answer your question as to why people don’t buy it in CO and move it around the country, it’s because they would lose their ass financially to do so. Buying at 400 and selling at 250 doesn’t sound like a great business plan.
