I've seen many people have sucess at moie names knowing only a fdistant memories. Im hoping you can help me with an old video arcade game.
This was after pong but just before/during space invaders if I remember correctly. It was a game similar in graphics to asteroids that had two spaceships defending a group of ten or so fuel containers. The game lasted as long as you were able to keep wave after wave of enemy ships from stealing all the containers. My brother and I loved this game with one of us camping our ship near the containers and shooting the approaching ships as the other would fly after the theives and shoot them which forced the containers to be dropped.
The graphics were very old school. All black background with the two ships shaped somewhat like straightlined boomerangs.

Wow, I don’t remember that one at all. But I have to say, those old vector games were cool — so fluid and smooth at a time when most games were a little clunky. The most advanced of the vector games was probably Star Wars but man would it suck down the quarters.
I took a course in programming in Fortran from a guy who invented Pong. Dang that was a long time ago.

Can’t remember the name of the game, but there was a sun in the center of the screen surrounded by 9 planets. You flew a spaceship, had to avoid the gravity of the sun (which had a black hole like gravity if you got too close) while shooting bad guys until you entered a “planet.” Once inside the planet, one had to remain aware of the gravity pulling from the sun, although the sun was out of sight.
In other words, if you entered the top right planet, the gravity would pull you left/down back toward the center. If you entered the bottom center, all the gravity would pull straight up. This while one had to fly their space ship around tunnels, avoid guns mounted in the tunnels, and I think other ships, too, make it all the way to the center of the planet, blow up whatever, and make it back out. Can’t touch the walls or you die.

My cousin had a pizza franchise in the early 1980’s and I visited the main shop a while ago and they still had the same Pac-Man and Dig-Dug machines I played back then. I find it ironic that I was a 17 year old in 1983 pumping quarters into them and now that it is 2015 at the age of 48 (will be 49 next month) I am still pumping quarters into the same exact machines. Heck, I even played against a few of today’s 17 year olds. B-)

BTW, I just pulled out my Bandai Galaxian that I got for Christmas of 1981 or 1982 and popped 4 c batteries into it. I was inspired by your post. It still works! I remember even Mom beat me at at fairly often both on the Bandai and on TV. I had a boatload of old games but I lost most of them, I don’t know what happened to them and I looked and looked until I had to give up the house because my mother passed away. At least I still have a few left. Still I’m glad it still works. It has a vacuum tube flourescent display.
I remember the game but not the name(s). I do recall seeing it in several arcades under at least two different names.
That looks like the game where you’ve got two monkeys throwing bananas at each other!
I’d go into an arcade with a couple of quarters and play “Dig Dug” on Friday night. By the time the place closed I’d rack up a whole bunch of “free games” and they’d write a voucher for my free credits. Then I’d go back on Saturday with a girlfriend and treat her to her favorite games.
In one of the Marvel Avengers movies, some tech on a space ship is sneaking a game of Galaga on his screen and someone fingers him, maybe Iron Man.
Used to love Missile Command and Tempest.
Only tangentially related to this topic / question, but I highly recommend the book “Ready Player One” for anyone who grew up with or enjoyed 80’s style video games.

Duh. .. never mind. I see you found your answer.
Top gun was a weird movie even in the 80’s. In hindsight it’s even weirder. The leading lady was a lesbian, Cruise is flaming even if he won’t come out of the closet, and he had more on screen chemistry with his “arch rival” then he ever did with his supposed romantic interest. Just creepy.
