Google has filed a patent for a toy that pays attention to who is in the room and that can interact with other media devices.
...
"The anthropomorphic device may be a doll or a toy that resembles a human, an animal, a mythical creature or an inanimate object," the published patent said.
The toys could also have face and voice recognition.

A blow up doll that performs for real? WOW!!
"Hi Barbie my name is Barry. My secret is that I have a lot in common with your friend Ken!"
A doll with the mind of Google? I would much rather have a Chucky!
“hey theyll love it” “ it’s Almost Alive” ..”SO Entertaining”..../s
Surely there would be other live children in the vicinity of any child who’d own one of these dolls?
When will they debut...the “American ..Idol” doll?
Dolls that act alive.
Excuse me while I run away, screaming...
“being able to listen for someone, turn a head to make “eye contact”
Yup.
Nightmares.
That right there.
Oh, hell no.
I’d agree. A child’s favorite toy may be a simple stuffed animal. It is not that the animal is life like. The child knows it is not real, but the child can use his own mind to imagine. ....and that’s a good thing.
More like Chucky...
Hey when they combine this tech with a RealDoll and it decides it’s a lesbian, you will REALLY have something to worry about.
Pleasant dreams ;)
Thats one of the ways..that we learn...how to think.
Kids who never learn to use their imagination by exercising it can end up being very bored demanding adults.
The best thing my mother ever did was get me a set of World Book Encyclopedias when I was a very young kid. The second was encourage reading of all kinds. Fact and fiction.
I think you pretty much nailed a lot of the issues today. We have an entire generation and a half that was never encouraged to ‘imagine’ outside some warped scheduled and regimented play date pizza bash. Which is to say, not at all.
I literally mourn for the kids that missed out on what even us 60s-80s kids enjoyed and learned from.
A fake soul is slightly better than entrapping real souls in the machine.
It ain’t gonna fly, because we all grew up watching Chucky movies. As you can see by the posts here. And that other ugly little marionette who came before him, who occasionally shows up on old Twilight Zone episodes. You know him. He’s got googley eyes, a hinged jaw, fat cheeks, and he’s made of wood and string. And he controls the man who created him, and forces his creator to kill people.
I think this trend is going to go the way of Google Glasses. Remember them? You’d put on these bulky, sci-fi looking glasses and walk down a crowded street, recording everything you see. And sooner or later somebody would get offended by the invasion of privacy and backhand them off your face. Stomp them to pieces. And kick your a$$ for wearing them. That’s why Google Glasses never took off.
There’s only one ‘soul’ per se. People can try creating one for eternity but it will never be one.
As to the worshiping idols thing posted earlier, I don’t see how that even makes sense. Is anyone ‘worshiping’ any of these things? If all it takes to be considered ‘worship’ is owning a computer program, which is all AI is, then a lot of Freepers and the general public have a lot of explaining to do because you can’t read FR without a computer based product being involved thats loaded with AI.
AI, even in it’s most William Gibson/Star Trek form is still just a program. Software written by man. Even if it can make a sammich when loaded into a robot.
Oh, too many negative vibes, man...you need love power...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4ht5we3qzY
I think if i remember correctly that we had three sets of encyclopedias..why Im still not certain. The World Book was one of them. I too read voraciously as a kid.
Texting all day...while walking and riding a bike,..and in the car or on the bus...certainly doesn’t match what we had.
im extremely thankful for the internet but without those books...it wouldnt exist
Chucky.
What is amazing to me is that with the world’s knowledge at our fingertips, we are a world of morons. “Google it” isn’t going to work well for hundreds of millions of people with no internet and no power when they beed to build fires and don’t know how.
Or how to read a map. Or the general location of important things like bodies of water or about a billion other little tidbits that used to be standard knowledge.
And “Googling it” doesn’t work well WITH an internet and power when you want accurate knowledge depending on the subject to begin with. Not with keyword buys and other propaganda tricks to get the official party line front and center and factual data buried to the 7th digit on a search.
