CBS To Air 2 Newly Colorized ‘I Love Lucy’ Episodes Sunday

Here’s your chance to see the Ricardo’s and the Mertzes like never before. Fans of I Love Lucy will be treated to another colorized presentation of two classic episodes on CBS tonight. The I Love Lucy Superstar Special may just be an elaborate repackaging of two 60-year-old black-and-white sitcom episodes, now meticulously colorized and shown back-to-back without a pause. But anything Lucy related remains a gold mine for CBS, even six decades later, and the May 17 special will probably not be an exception as reported by Movie Fone. Both episodes will be the debut of their colorized versions. At 7 p.m. central standard time tonight, CBS will air the I Love Lucy Superstar Special featuring the classic 1955 episode “L.A. At Last!” and the 1957 episode “Lucy and Superman.”

I recently downloaded an episode of WKRP, and it started with a shot of a car dashboard and a hand manually tuning the radio into the theme song. That rattled my neurons, I hadn't seen that scene since the show was originally broadcast in the late 70's, as it had been cut out of the reruns to make space for MORE stupid commercials.

And now when we watch a 30 minute episode, the entire program is 20-21 minutes long, which means that for every 2 minutes of show, you suffer through 1 minute of commercials. Gah!

Just a few years back, shows were offered online [South Park] by the creators but there were MANY interruptions for adverts, and the most maddening were the ones that repeated the same ad 3 or 4 times. As I have several programs to nuke ads, i don't know if it's still that way or not. I'm on several BP meds, and I ain't gonna look! Har!

Ha, I was at a friend's house and when we went by the TV, Get Smart was coming on and I happened to look long enough to note that it was in color! I thought to myself, wow, I didn't know that!

P.S., I just noticed your tagline, I always thought it meant Submachine Gun fan! Oops! ;)

My sentiments exactly. I can only tolerate watching “Match Game” on GSN only once in a while nowadays because you can easily tell how they’ve chopped up that program big time to make room for ads and other promotions, even cutting out the legendary ticket plugs. Other programs like “MASH” and “Sanford and Son” have also been edited further to make room for ads and also for censorship reasons.

It is a toss-up as to whether the b/w or colorized is the better one to watch.

Depends on the movie. I would not watch "The Maltese Falcon", for example...and many others that were "colorized".

That's just me...

I agree...i’m against this colorizing shit. Color isn’t as nice as b/w IMO.

Countdown to the remake where they’re all outed as LGBT.

"You've got quite a hitch in your git-along."

Sorry, couldn't help it. That wasn't George Reeves.

I can still laugh at the scenes with William Holden and Lucy even though I’ve seen it dozens of times.

I actually knew a person whose brother got lost at the NYC World’s Fair. Lucy found him while riding in her limo and made sure he was taken to security and reunited with his family. So, I think she was OK in real life.

It doesn’t seem natural or right watching them in color. Maybe I am used to seeing it in black and white.

That’s a nice story. Lucy and Desi were the right personalities for that particular time in American Culture.
Think of all the script writing, rehearsal and capitol investment that was needed to make it all happen, year after year. Back then, i think a couple had to sleep it separate beds, and there were no photos of 8 month pregnant actresses going shopping while dressed in a skin tight bandage dress.

Before the middle break, Lucy and Fred had an exchange. I had seen those episodes so many times that I knew them by heart. I wondered why that scene was cut out — <<<<<<<

I think there were lots of small pieces cut here and there, presumably to accommodate the number of commercials today. There was one episode where Fred and Ethel fight, and he’s mad because she said his mother looked like a weasel. In the original, I think she apologized by saying “I’m sorry your mother looks like a weasel”. But that part is now missing.

There are other episodes where the scenes don’t quite flow naturally due to some dialogue cut out that I can recall. I have all episodes on purchased DVDs, and I keep meaning to compare those versions with what is shown on TV now, which I often save on the DVR since my DVD player is on the blink.

I once ran across a website of Lucy fans where they discussed the cuts made in some of the episodes. I guess I’m a true fan, since two of my cats are named “Fred” and Ricky”.

From the era when TV was good clean entertainment - I still watch old I Love Lucy reruns from time to time and they are still good.
