It’s to simply look good to other people. Women’s self-esteem is fragile. I’ve had girlfriends who took less than 10 minutes to make-up, then I’ve had “those” that take me an hour to wait for them.
Actually I’m more curious why women have handbags and carry stuff in them. As a guy, all I carry are in my pants: wallet, phone and keys.
Just like my boomer mommy. She mocks my handbag as an RV in embryo form. "Will my first grandchild be a fifth wheel or a class C motorhome?"
I read somewhere that a person’s self image is based on how one believes they are perceived by others. If you believe that using makeup makes others see you as beautiful, then you might see yourself that way too.
I also have the wallet, phone, and keys. I also have; the checkbook he uses, the aspirin bottle he uses, the nail clippers and file he uses, the sunscreen he uses, the coupons he uses, the Shout wipes he very frequently uses. Otherwise the poor guy would need a “European shoulder bag”.
Yes, my purse is heavy.

Since I do not intend to hi-jack the thread, I’ll answer the OP now.
In my younger days I never left the house without being fully made up. I just assumed it was part of being well turned out.
As I entered my mid 50’s, I scaled back to tinted lotion, a bit of lipstick and a touch of mascara - none of those sink into the wrinkles. LOL!
