Way back in the original "I Am Legend" novel by Richard Matheson, the protagonist drives an International Harvester Scout across the post-apocalyptic landscape. Says parts are easy to find, and he can fix anything on the vehicle to avoid being stranded at night when the vampires come out.
:-). My dad always had a spare fan belt and the big stick he used to stretch it over the pulleys. The only time I remember being towed was when a second one snapped before he had the chance to buy a replacement. No vampires though.
With an air cooled rear engine, when the fan belt broke you had to get the engine turned off pretty quickly.
