I don't need a wristwatch to tell time...I have an iPhone that tells me that.

However, getting up to the minute information on my body vital and my steps walked, being able to see alerts on my wrist while I'm driving, etc., make the Apple Watch a very compelling device.

I’m not all that up on tech, so possibly somebody can tell me what I’m missing here.

Seems to me the iWatch is unnecessarily complex and therefore expensive.

Is there any particular reason it couldn’t just be a “dumb” device, essentially an alternate input-output device for your phone? The functionality would basically be a phone app, and could be updated or changed easily.

Most people will continue to carry a regular phone even if they have a Watch. The “dumb” watch connects to the phone in your pocket via bluetooth or some other wireless method.

The tablet, if you look at it right, could be the same thing. Not a freestanding device, but simply an alternate input/output device for the phone in your pocket.

You always carry your phone, which has all the functions builtin. You have the option of accessing those functions through a watch or tablet when convenient, and doubtless other devices not yet invented.

To my mind, the key advantage of the smartphone is reducing the number of devices you need to carry around.

If you have all the data in your pocket, in the phone, you can then sit down with it at a large monitor and keypad/mouse when you need to get some real work done. For the foreseeable future, this device would probably require computing power of its own, not just being an extension of the phone. But all your data could be with you all the time, and backed up to the Cloud.

What’s wrong with this scenario?

And, of course, Apple thanks you for your up-to-date health information. After you upgrade to the iWatch III, we'll even send alerts (to your wrist!) when we think you might be about to have a heart attack or stroke or brain aneurism!

And how do alerts on your wrist while driving differ any from alerts on your phone while driving? both require you to lift your hand and look at it.
