The American Midwest, in particular, seems to produce a lot of low-key wealthy who don’t adopt class snobbery or conspicuous consumption that the wealthy around the world embrace. People whose exposure to America is via pop culture never see America’s understated genius.

“People whose exposure to America is via pop culture never see America’s understated genius.”

Yes. Good point.

And, the problem is there are people who live in the US, from America, Americans, whose main exposure to America is by pop culture.

Some of the biggest changes for the better in America have been happening in the midwest as well.

Michigan, Wisconsin and Indiana have all gone RTW. All 3 have greatly eased gun restrictions (Including Illinois). All 3 have been easing restrictions on business. Here in Michigan we’ve managed to kill affirmative action in college admissions, dealt with the Detroit bankruptcy without federal interference, and gotten a new bridge started across the Detroit river without federal money (or approval).

Things aren’t perfect and never will be but we’ve got to appreciate what we’ve managed to do.

"low-key wealthy"

That was mentioned in the book "The Millionaire Next Door" by Thomas Stanley. Many wealthy people dress and live modestly and go about quite unnoticed by people.

Recent stats show that half of all Americans fail to save adequately for retirement, but I've yet to see a stat on the numbers of Americans (mostly above 50) who have net wealth of at least half a million. I'll bet it's very substantial.

“...People whose exposure to America is via pop culture never see America’s understated genius...”

And that is a darned shame. All that they are missing; all that they are stubbornly ignorant of. If only they would put down the crack-pipe of pop-culture.

Here’s something that you don’t want to spend a lot of time thinking about — Guess what candidates we will have to choose from as our political leaders in a generation or so?
