He was focused and ready, and relied on his skills to maintain the advantage should the situation have further deteriorated.
I would suggest that his combat experience was a factor. Every suspicious move is not an aggressive move.
I’m disappointed in some of the comments.

I thought we wanted our police to show judgement, courage, and the ability to discern threats... I will add that we want them frankly, to take some risks, the kill rate for innocents and unarmed people is getting out of hand high, they can't continue this rate of killing us just to play it safe.

He tripped and fell flat on his back with the suspect feet away from him. Yeah, we want our police to use judgement and discern threats. That did not happen in this case. The cop is lucky to be alive.
