In a speech one month ago, the first black president of the United States challenged millions of white Americans to resist the convenient allure of overlooking the countrys blemished moral record. It was a dual challenge, actuallyfirst to the classical understanding of American exceptionalism, but also to Americas persistent critics, who abjure the concept of exceptionalism altogether.
What greater expression of faith in the American experiment than this? President Barack Obama said. What greater form of patriotism is there than the belief that America is not yet finished, that we are strong enough to be self-critical, that each successive generation can look upon our imperfections and decide that it is in our power to remake this nation to more closely align with our highest ideals?

Lee and Davis didn't want blacks in the South unless they were somebody's property. If you want to tar Lincoln as a racist using today's standards then you have to be honest and admit that every Southern leader you care to name was as racist as Lincoln, if not more so.
The subject was Lincoln, not anyone else. Sorry you have such a hatred of the South as to try to bring them into every conversation. Seems you have a personal problem you might want to seek professional help getting over.
The subject was the oddball idea of making the Confederacy's defeat into a national holiday. It was you and your side-kick central_va who felt the need to bring Lincoln into it, and you who went all 'Reverend Al' on us and started calling people racist.
Sorry you have such a hatred of the South as to try to bring them into every conversation.
Say what?
Seems you have a personal problem you might want to seek professional help getting over.
And you might seek counseling on that rabid anti-Lincoln vendetta you have. It ain't healthy.
“it was an attack on the US, by treasonous states.”
I presume you are an American. As such, you were both on the “winning” and “losing” side. Lee, Grant and others are American heroes who exemplify our history as a great nation.
the 10th amendment to the Constitution was the biggest loss of the Civil War. It’s demise starting with the end of the civil war hurts America to this day.
One day patriots will seek to reclaim our Constitution. Plenty will call it treason. I pray enough will know the difference And find themselves on the American side against tyranny.
In what way?
Lincoln was no more of a racist than you are.
Oh, dear. Sorry to hear you’ll be mauled by crowds. I love the beauty of Virginia. Spent my honeymoon there touring the battlefields. I’m a nerd!
Starting with the civil war, the primacy of the federal government over powers reserved for the states was cemented. It’s been one sacrifice after another at the expense of states and AmErica since then.
Lee didn’t want slaves in the south at all. He wanted them freed when he accepted leadership as the head of the army.
"Considering the relation of master and slave, controlled by humane laws and influenced by Christianity and an enlightened public sentiment, as the best that can exist between the white and black races while intermingled as at present in this country, I would deprecate any sudden disturbance of that relation unless it be necessary to avert a greater calamity to both. I should therefore prefer to rely upon our white population to preserve the ratio between our forces and those of the enemy, which experience has shown to be safe. But in view of the preparations of our enemies, it is our duty to provide for continued war and not for a battle or a campaign, and I fear that we cannot accomplish this without overtaxing the capacity of our white population." - Robert E. Lee letter to Andrew Hunter, January 1865
That doesn't sound like someone who didn't want slaves at all to me. And that was four months before he surrendered to Grant.
For example?
The South is less racist, as well.
I need more days off, so why not all of them!
(I am kidding of course. I dont think we need a day off 150 years later. It would just confuse most of the uneducated idiots that walk the streets of our cities anyway. Many of them think MLK freed the slaves!)
starting with reconstruction, ending with the EPA. All powers not specifically enumerated in the Constitution but claimed by the federal government anyway.
Nevertheless, he advocated for the slaves to be freed before the war started. He thought it was an albatross.
Howie Carr says that Boston politicians and government hacks want to get a holiday every month.
And except for August, they have that in Boston (with Evacuation Day, Patriots' Day, Bunker Hill Day, as well as the holidays the rest of the country has).
Rhode Island celebrates Victory Day in August. It was formerly VJ Day, and an attempt was made to turn it into Bay Day, but it doesn't appear to have worked.
Quote please?
I don’t think you’re a nerd. I love history. We welcome you back anytime!
Thats only in Suffolk Co. The rest of is little people have to work all the way from Presidents Day to Memorial Day. Oh, the horror.
Thank you. I love travelling down south. I have friends who recently moved so now I have another excuse to visit.
