Wow. I was stationed at Altus AFB in ‘82 when it got hit by a tornado. We had golf ball sized hail for about 45 minutes before it dropped down and that was enough to turn parking lots into junk yards. Also did a number on roofs - it was common practice (probably still is) to just shingle over after a bad hail. Up to 3 layers of shingles before it was time to yank it off and start fresh.

I remember the one that hit Tulsa back in May 1971. It was a Wednesday night and trees were blown down everywhere. The University Tower lost part of it’s roof and window glass from it was all over the area including where I lived just north of Veteran’s Park.
The High School was having their graduation at the Civic Center downtown when it hit just as the ceremony was over. There was to be a second graduation after the first one, but all those people in the underground parking area refused to leave, and those outside wanted into the underground areas. What a mess!

I was lucky to be living in a basement apartment and the entire building filled up my rooms and stairwell area.

My sister said that apartment was the ONLY one she ever lived in that she felt safe from tornadoes.

Then I also missed the Dec 5, 1975 tornado which tore up part of East Tulsa where we were then living.
