Think of the word 'hearth'. It used to be the center of all activity and cooking. Still is, in some cases. It literally is the heart/hearth of the home.

Even in Germany, I had a kitchen, floor space, about 4.5 feet wide and about 7 feet long. Yep, that’s where everyone squeezed, when the food was ready, everyone moved to the dining area and that’s where we finished our time together.
