“But the F-16’s day is dead and gone!”

Whether it is or isn’t so is beside the point. How do you propose to replace the 350+ F-16 aircraft and their squadrons, one-third of the force, without seriously damaging the capabilities of the U.S. Air force? How do you retire the entire B-1 Lancer force without seriously damaging the capabilities of the U.S. Air Force? Remember, there are no appropriations by Congress for any replacements other than the failing F-35 programme.

The B-1 Lancer, a bomber pilot's fighter aircraft, and another dead duck.
CUAVs will replace them all.
All of air aircraft can not be replaced with UAVs, because of "situational awareness" requirements.
UAVs promote "tunnel vision", where a pilot in the cockpit has the ability to look all around himself, and thus able to get a better grip of the battlefield.
But take a look at the E-3 and its ability to access the battlefield from a distance.
CUAVs can be controlled by an Airborne Command Post like the ones used in the Original Gulf War.
But TANK KILLING ... that requires very rapid assessment of the battlefield, and I believe that only a piloted aircraft can do that job.
