Probably, because the old films could not hide as much things like height, the heights had to be real. Today, thanks to special effects, they can hide things like this so other things, like aesthetics become more important.

Alan Ladd and Audie Murphy were short. James Dean was short (5’7”). Bogey was 5’8”. But a lot of the actresses were shorter back then too. Now they are all runway model height.

You kinda get used to all the special effects and make-up of monsters and things in movies today but to take an actor the size of John Rhys and turn him into a dwarf like they did in LOTR, I find simply amazing........
