Why would a human go for the face and not the meaty part of the body first? An animal wouldn't have been able to remove the clothing, so would claw at the face.
Just another attempt to demonize the white European settlers.

That was a hard hit to the back of the head. It was likely a metal tool or weapon and not from an animal.
