And you're absolutely right for shutting off your spell checker. Despite, the brilliant accuracy of spellcheckers to immediately detect improperly spelled words, they are absolutely, positively clueless when it comes to getting the proper homonym to match up and very often, despite the perfect spelling the grammar ends up paying the price for the spell checker's ineptitude.
